Flanked by the Sierra Madre and Snowy Range Mountains, Saratoga sits on the banks of the North Platte River. Prehistoric volcanic activity left the town with a beautiful mineral hot springs pool, free and open 24 hours a day, year round.

Saratoga and Encampment host many fun activities including Woodchopper’s Jamboree and Rodeo (June), Fourth of July celebration including a traditional small town parade, fireworks, & Festival of the Arts, Grand Encampment Cowboy Gathering (July), Platte River Rodeo (July), Pieces of History Quilt Show (Aug), Steinley Cup Microbrewery Competition and Chili Cook-off (Aug), Wyoming Film Festival (Aug), and Copper Days Festival & Antique Tractor Pull (Sep) to name a few event highlights in the area. Many other fun activities await!

Area Wildlife

Abundant wildlife live in the area. The North Platte is a Blue Ribbon trout river alive with activity in the summer and fall. Big game hunting begins in September, including antelope, deer, elk, moose, and black bear. Blue grouse, sage grouse, dove, duck and goose hunting also begins in the fall.

Whitewater and scenic rafting are popular sports throughout the spring and summer. The North Platte River is one of the few rivers that flows north, and more than 65 miles have been designated as a “Blue Ribbon” trout fishery by the Wyoming Game and Fish Department.  There are more than 3,200 fish per mile, and with ratings among the highest for productivity, availability and aesthetics, the North Platte is well deserving of the “Blue Ribbon” title.

Snowy Range Scenic Byway

The Snowy Range Scenic Byway, Hwy 130, was designated as the second National Forest Scenic Byway in the United States in 1988. Open from Memorial Day through October, weather permitting, the drive is must for visitors as well as locals. Enjoy a picnic lunch at Lake Marie atop of the Snowy Range for an enjoyable, and breathtaking day-trip. Hiking trails will lead you to the very top of this spectacular location. Snowy Range and Sierra Madre Mountains offer 44 hiking trails for the novice and experienced hiker. The Continental Divide Trail is unique to the Sierra Madre Range.  It is part of the 2500 mile Great Divide Mountain Bike Route that follows the Continental Divide from the Canadian border to Mexico.  This trail climbs above 10,000 ft with some of the best vistas in Carbon County.

Things to Do

Visit the Saratoga and Encampment Museums for a peek back at the region’s wild west history. Stroll along Saratoga’s Main Street for an enjoyable shopping experience, followed by lunch at one of the town’s fine restaurants. Other local amenities include a modern medical facility, unique shopping, restaurants, golfing, swimming, hiking, a national fish hatchery with public tours, and picnicking.
